Erosion & Construction Solutions dba Siltworm
Entrepreneurship enriches business owner’s personal, professional lives
Cousins DJ and Joe Moore were building houses when an obvious gap in the Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan market hammered home a business opportunity.
“Joe saw an opportunity with sediment filtration products and wanted to bring that expertise here,” DJ said. “I see us like Walt and Roy Disney—Joe had the idea, and I ensured the business practices were in place to make it a reality. He handled the vision, and I focused on keeping the business running smoothly.”
Erosion & Construction Solutions was cultivated out of Joe’s awareness for the required erosion control during the homebuilding process. By specializing in storm water pollution prevention, the company allows the construction team to focus on building. Through products, such as Siltworm and BioWorm, as well as focused services, sediment is prevented from further polluting water sources.
“We manufacture and sell the sediment filtration logs as well as provide implementation, installation, maintenance and removal across the life of a construction project,” DJ said. “Our customers focus on construction, and we free them up by handling site runoff.”
Originally, DJ joined the homebuilding business in 2006 as a college freshman. Joe Moore and DJ’s dad, Dan, had him working on the company’s finances as well as being a part of a carpentry framing crew. DJ continued taking care of the financials even after he took on a full-time job. Once the idea took root for the SWPPP company, DJ was able to transition into the company full-time.
“We stopped building homes in 2017 and haven’t looked back,” he said.
Today, the company has 30 employees and ships its products to 40 states and works with customers on installation and maintenance all over Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin.
“Building this business has allowed me to hire people from my community, friends, and family, and help them develop beyond just their roles at work,” DJ said. “It’s not just about employment; it’s about fostering growth.”
DJ said he enjoys watching his team members grow into their roles while having the freedom to channel his energies into his faith, family, work and community.
“In our company, we support people in using their God-given skills to contribute, even if our work doesn’t seem ‘world-changing’ on the surface,” he said. “One team member has grown immensely in his personal and professional life over the years, and it’s been fulfilling to watch him develop as a person.
“Ultimately, entrepreneurship gives me the flexibility to choose what I focus on and the opportunity to live out my faith and values in both work and family life.”
