Nature’s Cupboard

Family, collaborative foundation cultivate natural food store success

In 1980, a handshake, healthy focus and a $20,000 loan launched Nature’s Cupboard as a spot for natural food choices in Michigan City.

Founder LaVora Tucker originally entered the deal to assist a friend, before taking over the market that offers healthy, high-quality food and wellness choices and establishing a community-enriched spot.

“At the time, no one knew about health food. There weren’t many places to shop for it,” said LaVora’s daughter and current owner, Mylese Tucker. “The early business grew through recessions and never felt the sting of a bad economy.”

Mylese worked as a flight attendant before returning to Michigan City and entering the family business with her mother in 1992. The store turned into a passion for Mylese, and she became a partner in 2007.

“At my first trade show I attended a seminar on growing your business, and I was hooked,” Mylese said. “But it was having kids that really sparked my love for all things organic and natural. I wanted them putting the healthiest foods possible into their bodies.

“Later, I participated in the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program. That’s where I learned how to take our small store to the next level, with a business plan to help us continue to grow.”

Mylese faced industry changes as larger retailers entered the world of natural foods in the 2000s when organic became mainstream.

“It was a total cottage industry before big business caught on. Conventional grocers were taking a big piece of our pie,” Mylese said.

Mylese found and joined nationwide cooperative INFRA in 2006. This allowed her to collaborate with other independent retailers, stay competitive and grow Nature’s Cupboard. Serving on its board, she learned from the best in the industry.

Today, Nature’s Cupboard’s full-service grocery stores offer organic produce, locally sourced meats, supplements, natural body care, and fresh juices and smoothies. There are 22 employees across all three locations: Michigan City, Chesterton and newest spot LaPorte, which opened in 2025.

“My mom was the true entrepreneur. She was still working well into her 80’s and lived to see the new space in Michigan City after we moved,” Mylese said. “Our team has helped me succeed. Our employees are the best – that includes my husband and kids as they all pitch in.”

Nature’s Cupboard has carved a place in the community by supporting youth sports, local theaters, events and races and animal welfare organizations. The team routinely donates food, products, and financial support to local food pantries, shelters, schools, community organizations, fundraisers, and families in need.

“My mother created something fabulous. She was so caring and generous to the community,” Mylese said. “I have that legacy and original customer base that loved her.”

She advises entrepreneurs to follow their instincts and understand their paths.

“You have to trust your gut. Do your research and know what you’re getting into,” she said. “Know your industry and find the people you can call on for help.”
