Cute as a Cupcake

Baker cooks up recipe for success as cupcakes spark joy, sense of community

Based on the belief that “A Life without Cupcakes is a Life without Love!” Michelle Wainwright is swirling the sweeter side of life into serious business.

Cute as a Cupcake is baking up sweet treats from scratch with flavorful ingredients that are handcrafted into cupcakes, cupcakes in a jar and more. Her creations are mixed up in a range of flavors from birthday cake and cookie dough to key lime and red velvet. There are gluten-free, vegan and sugar-free options available.

“I enjoy my work because it brings happiness and allows me to create a product that brings people together,” she said. “My business is built around the idea of creating joy in cupcakes, and I take pride in delivering high-quality, delicious products that leave a lasting impression.”

The business was born from Michelle being laid off from her corporate job in 2014. She transitioned into entrepreneurship and dove into business ownership with a kiosk in Southlake Mall as well as selling at farmers markets. She has always been comfortable with a spoon in her hand, baking up her grandmother’s recipes.

“My journey from corporate uncertainty to becoming a cupcake connoisseur exemplifies my resilience and ability to turn obstacles into sweet success,” she said. “My passion for baking and community building have guided my path to the bakery industry, which continues to grow steadily.”

Today, Cute as a Cupcake has been spreading joy through sweetness for nine years as a Minority and Woman owned Business in Merrillville. She has 10 employees and has grown new services and products, including a vending machine for her cupcakes in a jar.

She offers catering, corporate orders and Cutie the Cupcake Truck, which can be reserved to drive out to parties, weddings, showers, fundraisers, festivals and more to dish out her cupcakes. Her Cutie Cupcakes in a Jar can be shipped anywhere in the U.S. as a special gift for friends and family. The jars are filled with two layers of cake and icing and are ready-to-eat.

Michelle also creates community connections through her nonprofit, Cutie Cares, which tackles food insecurities and promotes community wellness.

“I find purpose in the community-building aspect of my business and enjoy being an entrepreneur as I can drive my vision forward, uphold my values and make decisions that align with my passion for quality and service,” she said.
