Safety zone: Family steers traffic

control company to success

In road work zones, the safety of drivers and workers is paramount to members of the Triska family, who have placed their share of barricades, signs and traffic cones on roads since launching Traffic Control Specialists Inc.

“It’s dangerous out there on the highway and roads. You have to be aware of where you are at at all times. When you are driving past a construction zone, it is nothing like when you are standing in one … It’s pretty intense,” said Tracey Triska, who leads the company along with husband Barry and sons Brian and Steve.

The Starke County-based traffic control company started in 2007 with Barry, Tracey and Steve out at the job sites themselves.

“Barry had such a good reputation in the industry that contractors and engineers would say you should do something on your own,” Tracey said. “It took a couple years to convince Barry. It’s hard to leave a job with benefits and step away from that and have nothing for awhile. I finally convinced him and now, here we are.”

The company offers rental of cones, barricades, signage, contract traffic control, pavement markings, sales of permanent signs and equipment, consulting and maintenance of traffic design.

The business has expanded its facility in Knox over the years, culminating with constructing a state-of-the-art facility on 16 acres with room for signage, machinery, fleet service maintenance, improved sign shop and room to grow for material sales. TCS, Inc. has more than 100 employees.

“It’s taken a lot of hard work by our people as we have grown. A lot of that is working on short notice, long hours, working nights and weekends and being there when you say you are going to be there. It’s taken everyone that works here to buy into that,” Brian said.

“We are building something respectable with over 100 employees who can provide for their families because all of us are working toward that.”

TCS, Inc. continues to strengthen its roots to the community, which have been growing for 25 years. TCS, Inc. has sponsored the Oregon Davis and North Judson boosters as well as the Knox High School band. Barry is a founding member of the Knox Pop Warner and TCS, Inc. often donates to non-profits and school events.

“It’s a small community and you get to know people … we are hiring people that we coached when they were little on T-ball teams,” Tracey said. “It makes sense to be involved and help out when you can.”

In the future, TCS, Inc. is looking to diversify into other areas of traffic control striping, working on building the sales component of the company and expanding its territory.

“We try to do a good job, but you are only as good as your employees. We really have to give a pat on the back to our employees for doing their jobs correctly,” Tracey said. “Whatever our philosophy is as a business, it wouldn’t work without them.”
