Landscaping services, garden center help embellish region outdoor spaces
Season after season, the Hubinger Landscaping team is hard at work beautifying region residential and commercial properties.
“We have different divisions: landscape construction, the garden center and lawn maintenance,” said Hubinger Landscaping President Donna Hubinger.
At the lawn and garden center, guests can pick up a variety of shrubs, flowers, trees, seeds and plant care as well as garden decorations such as fountains and benches.
Under the service umbrella is commercial maintenance, snow and ice removal, landscape construction and landscape design. Through the maintenance program, the team provides such offerings as mowing, trimming and edging, mulching, core aeration, fertilization, watering and plant and flower installation.
Through landscape design, staff members help lay out a plan for new and existing homes and businesses. Looking at the entire property, the design may include installing a new paver driveway or adding a patio. Garden designers can help with the task of arranging flowerbeds.
The landscape construction process goes from developing and preparing the site and constructing structures and pathways to cultivating healthy soil and planting flowers and shrubs.
The company was launched in 1968 on 45th Avenue in Gary by Dave Hubinger and incorporated in 1975. The team moved to its current location, at the intersection of Broadway and 113th Avenue in Crown Point, in 1978. The lawn and garden center was added in 1984.
“I have always been a part of the business since 1968,” Donna said. “I became owner in 2001.”
Today, Donna focuses on the company’s day-to-day operations, including accounts receivable and accounts payable. She has worked with her husband and son to grow and develop the company – now in its third generation - over the years.
Beginning with six full- and part-time employees, Hubinger now has 35 full-time and 29 part-time or seasonal workers.
Donna attributes the business’s continued success to “our loyal employees.”
“Some have been here for 30+ years,” she said.
Donna and her staff strive to stay up on trends and continued education. Earlier this year, 12 staff members became Indiana Accredited Horticulturists.
The team also looks to connect with the community by offering various classes and get-togethers to spotlight how easy gardening can be. During the holiday season, class participants created a 12-inch holiday pot filled with live greenery and decorations.
Donna looks to the future of the business through a simple lens that has helped sustain the company year after year.
“Our future goal is to continue to give good service to our customers,” she said.
